Cold Plunge Chiller Sizing: Matching a Chiller to Your Tub
Quick answer
Chillers are rated in BTU per hour — the ones here run 3,010 to 10,000 BTU/hr. Sizing depends on three things: how much water you are cooling, how far below ambient you want to hold it, and how well the tub is insulated. Manufacturers publish a recommended volume range for each unit, and that range assumes a modest temperature drop — if you want 40°F water in a hot climate, size up rather than to the edge of the range, because a chiller working at its limit runs constantly and still may not get there.
The three numbers that decide it
Sizing a chiller is not complicated, but it is easy to get wrong by looking only at price. Three things determine whether a unit will hold your tub where you want it.
- Water volume. Every chiller is published with a recommended reservoir range. Most home plunge tubs hold somewhere between 80 and 110 gallons, which puts them near the top of a quarter-horsepower unit's range and comfortably inside a half.
- How far below ambient you want to sit. This is the one people skip. Holding 50°F water in a 70°F room is a 20-degree gap; holding 40°F water in a 100°F garage is a 60-degree gap, and the heat leaking in scales with it. The same chiller does both jobs very differently.
- Insulation and lid discipline. A thick shell and a closed lid reduce the heat the chiller has to remove all day long. This is the cheapest capacity available to you and it costs nothing to use.
A sane sizing rule
Take the manufacturer's recommended volume range for the unit. If your tub sits in the lower half of that range, in a climate-controlled space, and you want water around 50°F, the unit will do it comfortably. Move toward the top of the range, put the tub outdoors, or push the target below about 45°F, and you should be looking at the next size up.
The reason to leave headroom is not just achievable temperature — it is runtime. A chiller working near its limit runs almost continuously, which costs more in electricity than a larger unit cycling on and off, and gives you nothing back on the days it cannot quite reach the setpoint. What the table cannot tell you
Two things matter enormously and appear in no spec sheet. The first is duty cycle — how many hours a day the unit actually runs — which depends on your climate and insulation and which no manufacturer publishes. The second is noise. A chiller is a compressor and a fan; if it is going next to a bedroom window, that matters more than a few hundred BTU.

- What size chiller do I need for a cold plunge?
- Start with the manufacturer's recommended water volume for the unit, then size up if any of these are true: you live somewhere hot, the tub is outdoors or in an uninsulated garage, you want water below about 45°F, or more than one person uses it back to back. Those recommended ranges assume ordinary conditions and a moderate drop below ambient, not the coldest setting in a Texas July.
- What does BTU per hour actually mean here?
- It is the rate at which the unit removes heat. More BTU/hr means it pulls the water down faster and holds it against a bigger gap between water and air. Note the fine print on the specs: at least one manufacturer here states its BTU figure is measured at a specific ambient temperature, so the number is a rating condition rather than a promise at any temperature.
- Do I need a separate pump?
- Usually yes. Several chillers in the table below have no built-in pump and the manufacturer specifies a separate one with a required flow rate and maximum head pressure. Getting flow wrong is a common cause of a correctly sized chiller underperforming — check the flow-rate column before you buy anything.
- Why does my chiller struggle in summer?
- Because it is fighting the air as well as the water. A chiller has to remove not only the heat in the tub but everything that leaks in continuously, and that leak rate scales with the gap between the water and the surroundings. Sun on the tub, a thin shell, and an open lid all multiply it. Insulation and a lid are the cheapest capacity you can buy.
- Is a bigger chiller always better?
- Not automatically. A larger unit costs more, draws more power, and takes more space, and for a small well-insulated indoor tub it is money spent on capacity you never use. The case for sizing up is real conditions — heat, sun, outdoor placement, a cold target — not the number itself.
